The Beautiful Ones

There just aren't any beautiful women left. Or at least, not in my spectrum. Sure, there's pretty ones, but none of the truly beautiful. Beauty isn't just your looks, it's the way you hold yourself, the way you talk. Those women are of a different time. I find myself constantly inspired by them. You all already know of my obsession with Marilyn. I think that era was a golden time. Women like Marilyn and Audrey brought the world class. You could be sexy, but it was going to be the most classy sexy ever. They perfected the art of "leaving it to the imagination". And so, today, I bring you on a time trip. I collected images of "moments". These weren't photo shoots, these were the bloopers. Enjoy...

Louise Brooks, Silent Film Star, and the original "Dangerous one".

theniftyfifties:

Audrey Hepburn applies lipstick on the set of ‘Sabrina’, 1954.

Audrey Hepburn on the set of Sabrina, 1954. That woman could make putting on lipstick an ART.

Brigette Bardot. Really, nothing needs to be said about her. You get it.

Marylin Monroe. This picture is so gorgeous. Her pants alone are fab. This is probably THE original "Picture of a girl taking a picture" picture.

Ok, so MAYBE this one was posed a teensy-tiny bit. But that's ok.

Marlene Dietrich. She who famously said "If there is a supreme being, he's crazy." She also was the only one who could ever really pull off a pantsuit.

Our American princess, Princess Grace Kelly Of Monaco. She really had it down. And that bathing suit..

Grace and Audrey at the Oscars.
Marilyn again. Because I'M in charge, and I can obsess over her at will.

And finally, what is quite possibly the best perfume ad ever. Recognize anyone?

Ah, to live in the land of black and white.

"- And everything we do tonight's gonna be sexy."

"Who are you wearing?"

Who CARES what you're nominated for, all we want to know is where that dress came from. I am still of the firm opinion that Oscars should be awarded for Best Dressed On The Red Carpet. But maybe not. I mean, then Angelina would win every year, and no one would have a shot. As one over-excited little reporter put it "Angelina and Brad could never act again and they'd still be  invited to every award show there is just so they could sit there and look good." Truth. Moving on.

And the nominees for Best Dressed At The Academy Awards Are.....

       Cameron Diaz

Cameron kept it simple, elegant, and classy in Gucci, and looked gorgeous. Especially when she was presenting with that train wreck otherwise known as JLo (What was she doing there anyway???).

Emma Stone
Emma's bringing glam back in this raspberry Giambattista Valli. I thought she looked stunning. However, her hair was a bit blah, and she's very pale. But when she got up on stage and was presenting, she owned it.

Rooney Mara

Rooney was perfect. The red lip, the hair. It all showed off her stunning Givenchy dress beautifully. Not to mention that she just looked gorgeous.

I don't really know who should win. I mean, these are three very different styles. I have an idea.

Cameron Diaz - Best Dressed in a Classy And Natural Style

Emma Stone - Best Dressed in Brightest and Most Personality-Like Style

Rooney Mara - Best Dressed in a Most Effortless Style

There. I decided. :)

xx,
J

p.s. If you were wondering, the quote that this post is titled after was said on the red carpet yesterday by Sandra Bullock, who was  (*cries a little*) not included on this list because she was wearing a Marchesa monstrosity.

I'M the boss, and YOU'RE boring.

So do you all remember how I was trying to figure out what my role in the fashion world is? I figured it out. I am going to be the next Barbara Walters, if Barbara Walters had been the spirit daughter of Betsey Johnson and James Dean, who'd been dropped on her head in a puddle of glitter, then raised by Ellen and Anna Wintour. Just FYI.

But onwards and upwards and sideways, as they say. I want to talk about Anna. This is a subject I can ramble on for years about. She's been called "a Holy Terror" and a "Style Dictator", and my personal favorite, "Darth Vader in A Frock". I think she's brilliant. So she doesn't smile a lot, and yes, she's brutally honest. But the woman oversees the Met ball, brought us John Galliano,  and is the EDITOR IN CHIEF OF VOGUE. Plus, a fashion how just can't be taken seriously unless she's in their front row.  I count her as one of my biggest inspirations. There's actually this GIANT picture of her in my lookbook.

ANYWAY, I was really excited when I heard she was going to be on 60 Minutes, but then really sad when I found out it was on at the same time as the Superbowl. I actually just watched it today, and wasn't disappointed. The episode covers three inspiring women, Dolly Parton, Meryl Streep, and of course, Anna Wintour. I wanted to share :) The highlight is Anna, but I recommend watching the other two womens sections as well. They are all considered the BEST at what they do.

Feeling inspired yet?

J

p.p.s. Before you ask: I'm going to do a post next week of all my favorite bit's and pieces from all the NYFW shows :)

H&M, You've Done It Again.

I have grown up hearing about H&M. My mum, who is German, was forever telling me about the gorgeous clothes she got there when she was young. I actually only went to an H&M store for the first time last year. But now I'm hooked. And to add the frosting to the cupcake, they have campaign video's like this one, directed by Sophia Coppola, that are less advertisements, and more works of art.

and I KNOW y'all saw that David Beckham ad during the Super Bowl. If you didn't, let me sum it up for you.

What the hell am I doing here anyway?

Seriously. What the hell am I doing here? I mean, what makes me relevant?

Many of you may not know this, but I ran a blog called Operation Indigo. I'm not even sure what it was about. All I knew was that I was going to make a change. I went to a womens even and stalked down the first Lady of California (at the time) Maria Shriver. I was one of thirty girls picked in a national search by Discovery Girls magazine, recognized as role models, where I met one of my best friends. I was on TV!!! and yet, that blog only had seven followers. SEVEN.

But then I got bored. I am a bit of an attention hoarder, and this blog wasn't getting anything. I needed to find something else I was good at. Something I enjoyed. Something that would be fun. I read an article somewhere about Tavi. (Don't these things always come back around to her?) and thought " Oh, now THERES something I could do!" I've always had great style, or so I'd been told. I'd  wanted to be a model my whole life. I dressed up as TYRA for career day in the fourth grade. So I thought this would be easy. I never even thought it through. I just DID. I sat down that day and created this blog, and wrote my infamous first post. The rest is, as they say, LAST SEASON.

There's a point to all this, promise.
Here it is: There are aproximatly 50 bajillion other fashion bloggers out there, ranging from the age of 10 to about 159. Each one thinks that their blog is better than everyone elses.Well, I don't, that's true. I've found a ship load of other blogs that are better than mine, but that's not the point. We all want to believe that one day, we'll hit it big. We'll be Tavi, or Rumi, or Kristen. We'll be the one that sits next to Anna Wintour at Chanel, or Franca Sozzani at Missoni. Thats why day after day, personal style bloggers who really wish they could just put on jeans and a blouse and get on with their day, root through their closet to find an outfit you haven't seen yet. That's why runway bloggers dredge up picture after picture of of Style.com. That's why I spend hours trying to write something worthy of you reading it.

We all want to be the one that stands out.

But when someone asked me "What makes you different from the 50 bajillion?", all I could think of was, "They've got their act together.". I'm not personal style, I'm not runway, I'm RANDOM. When I was writing Operation Indigo, which is still up, by the way, I knew what I was doing. I was changing the world. A little bit. I was one of a kind. Now, I'm like a grey Louboutin in a row of black ones. I stand out, but not as much as a, say, NEON ORANGE one.  You look at the grey one and go, "oh, that's pretty", but look at the orange one and say "I've been looking for YOU.". And that's the reality. I am a grey Louboutin.

Or maybe not. Maybe I'm a white one. A dye-able, white Loub. Somebody grab some RIT. I'm about to paint this place neon PINK. (Which we all know is better than orange anyway)

Only one in a million become Tavi.

Or maybe 2 in a million.
Because then there's space for me.

xx,

J
ps. In case you didn't understand that, I am trying to figure out what makes me relevant. Any ideas?

Karlie

I  love Karlie Kloss. I just think she's really pretty, and down to earth. She's also very distinctive. When going through pictures from various Fashion Weeks, I could always pick her out, which, in my mind, classifies her as a super model. I found this interview she did with Vogue Germany, you'll enjoy it. My favorite line? "Glitter is dangerous!!! "
