music monday//queen of the cover

I am really unclear on how I feel about "Kesha".

I mean, she seems cool and all, but...
where is the glitter?
The gold tooth?
The dollar sign?!?!?!?

However, I'll give her all of the gold stars for pulling it together
and putting on her big girl mick jagger inspired menswear.

I'm really interested to see where she goes with this new version of herself.
since I'm assuming she won't be hitting the city feeling like p diddy.

Or will she?

travelin' punk rock // soft + spikes

 #teenvogue shirt c.o MNKR // pants c.o motel rocks//shoes: converse//
bag c.o hippe hebbedignjetes//bracelet: c.o. stella and bow

 So I'm STILL at camp,
but I haven't abandoned you.

I am sharing this outfit with you...
from the past.

MNKR could not have been more spot on with this shirt.
Most importantly,
it's soft.
But it's also really cute and has a fantastic graphic.

Unfortunately,
I wasn't very spot on with my focus
and every close up of it makes it appear that the shirt says "travie moor wuk loss".

So you'll just have to use your imagination.
This is one of my more
 punk-rock-I-definitely-listen-to-cooler-music-than-I-actually-do
outfits.

Plaid pants tends to have that effect on everything.

Or maybe it's that my bag is bristling with enough spikes
to give several TSA officers quite the thrill.

ps.
only three more days until we are properly united.
me and my wifi, that is.

and you,
 I suppose.

dancing pants // off to camp

#teenvogue
pants c.o. living doll la // shirt c.o. living doll la //
 shoes c.o bc footwear//sunnies: zero uv//purse c.o pepaloves

It is verrrry rare that I will take an outfit right off the mannequin,
but today is one of those rare days.

When Living Doll LA asked me to style a few of their pieces,
I had a few thoughts:

1. I NEED THOSE PANTS.

2. They're made in the USA yippee

While I appreciate fine European goods as much as the next girl,
there will always be a special place in my heart and closet for pieces made in the USA.
'Murica

Plus, who could argue with these pants?

They're my first pair of palazzos, and if every pair is as great as these, I can feel an addiction coming on. They're really great for swishing about during the summer. I was a bit worried that the fabric was going to tear or do something else weird, but the quality of both pieces are amazing.

This tank top was made for me.
 That's all.

Also, today I am headed off to camp for a week of tie-dye
(only acceptable to be worn deep in the woods)
camp song singing
(by other people)
and very articulate braiding done by very little girls
(on my head)

I won't have any wifi or signal or access to fire
so smoke signals are out of the question,

but you can send me a carrier pigeon.

xx

ps. no. wifi.

junes tunes // playlist

This one is a bit late only because I have
had THE hardest time narrowing down my favorites.

It seems like some of the best music pops up around the summer,
and I always rediscover old favorites making playlists for pool parties and barbeques.
I put a Hilary Duff song in one yesterday

A couple of the names on this months' list are fairly unknown, starting with AJR.
They're three brothers out of New York who make all their own music, and make it well.
I'm 500% obsessed with their song "I'm Ready".
I'm ready for more music boys

We've also got some standards (is there a Macklemore song I don't love? I think not.),
and some old stuff from newbies like Rixton. For some reason, all anyone knows of them is "Me and My Broken Heart". My heart breaks for anyone who hasn't seen the hilarious video for Make Out,
the original viral hit made viral by other viral hits.

The one I'm most excited about though is Pills and Potions.
People have been messing with Nicki Minaj for ages and she has executed her Great Return.
This song really shows off something I've known she had all along: mad skills.

So open up your spotify
and swing from some chandeliers.

striped life // boots are best

dress: c.o. chiara fashion // shoes: c.o. kling//purse: c.o. pepaloves// sunnies: forever 21

You know when you are doing something,
then realize that you were meant to be somewhere ten minutes ago,
and so you just snatch whatever's nearest and hope you have enough
je ne sais quoi to pull off the disaster it is sure to be?

That's what happened here.

And guess what?

It works.

Mainly because my new boots from Kling are the coolest.
There's no way for them to not look extremely rad.

Paired with a simple dress and some matching accessories,
itty bitty teeny tiny pepaloves satchel you are so cute
they put the whole outfit on another level.

Much like my hair,
which adds an extra three.

supermodel sunnies // #karliexwarby

Is there some sort of record for how many charitable organizations
one supermodel can support on style alone?

Karlie Kloss is trying to beat it,
even though she might be the current title holder.

Her latest efforts to improve everyone's lives come in the form of a collaboration with Warby Parker, those marvelous purveyors of vintage-inspired eyewear.

In case you've never heard of them, here is what you need to know:
1. They make amazing sunglasses.

Now they've partnered up with everyone's favorite model/baker/multi-tasker/Taylor Swift bff
to design an itty bitty capsule collection of classic shapes.

My personal favorites are the Marple,
just because the shape is graceful while still being cool.
Gold rims +  purple lenses = cool

But of course, being Karlie-related, it's not enough to bring us stunning sunglasses.
We're going to help out while we're at it.
A portion of each sale is going to Edible Schoolyard NYC, who get gardens and kitchens to kids and schools in underprivileged areas of New York so they can learn how the whole "healthy eating and living" shebang works, and therefore have healthier (and by relation, happier) futures. These particular donations will support two farm stands in East Harlem + Brooklyn. Being from California aka agriculture capital of the United States, I fully appreciate the benefits of having fruit and veggies within a snacking distance.

But we're not done yet.

In accordance with Warby Parker's own ideals, for ever pair sold, another pair of sunglasses will be donated to a person in need through their non-profit partners.

Win-win-win.

(Like you really needed that many reasons to get these sunglasses anyway)

I trusted you

bag c.o. pepaloves//film cameras ftw or nah

I'VE BEEN POISONED.

BY FOOD.

Which is actually worse than being poisoned by a person
 because I trusted food.

Anyway, it took me out for a week.
No blogging, no going anywhere,
and possibly worse of all:
no selfies.

I hit post limit on tumblr.
Created eight hour-long playlists.
Read all of my library books.
Wrote some awful poetry.
I even ran out of netflix to watch.
That is how dire the situation was becoming.
 But I have eaten haggis,
and once you have eaten haggis,
there is not a food poison known to man strong enough to keep you down.

So I return,
with a list of blog post ideas, lots of gorgeous outfits,
and a strong aversion to ranch dressing.

a matter of being marilyn//happy birthday ms. monroe

Everyone expects me to be an Audrey girl,
but I never quite got there.

There are a lot of, well, dead people I wish I could meet, and Marilyn Monroe is one of them.
I think she is truly one of the most fascinating Hollywood stories to ever exist.
Because that is exactly what she is: a story.
Or maybe a legend.

As Marilyn herself said often,
the person she'd "turn on" wasn't her, just a finely tuned role.
A quick change.
When you think about that, it becomes apparent how truly talented she was.

It has pained me for quite a while that people choose to focus on how she died, rather than how she lived. Even some 60-odd years after her death, we are still proving her point: "No one takes me seriously, and no one truly cares about me as a person." No one reads the stories written by her friends of her opening her door to whoever needed help, or her many hours spent collecting books for her personal library. We talk about her affairs, her marriages, her problems. When we discuss her style, we talk about that ridiculous white dress and the beauty mark, instead of her extensive collection of tailored basics and her secret blonde dye, which took 26 other shades to create.
There was an art to being Marilyn Monroe that I have yet to see anyone properly replicate,
or appreciate.

So on what would have been her 52nd birthday,
I ask that we move past the Warhol portrait,
it was fun the first eighty bajillion times we saw it on a tshirt
that awful "My Week With Marilyn" film,
ugh
and why she isn't here today,
build a bridge and get over it
and celebrate the woman who was the original Hollywood Star.

"We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle."
xx
Justina

ps.
whoever allowed a McDonalds to be put behind Marilyn Monroe's star on the Walk of Fame:
we are not friends.
